Instrument 05 · Price your hours
What An Hour Of
Your Life Actually Pays.
Your stated wage divides pay by contracted hours. It ignores the commute you are not paid for, the overtime you do not bill, and the costs that exist only because you have a job. Subtract those and the real rate appears — usually a third lower, and far harder to argue with.
Count the round trip, plus any getting-ready time that only exists because you go to work. These hours are spent on the job whether or not anyone pays for them.
Childcare, parking, tools, a second car, courses you would not otherwise take. Only what disappears the day the job does.

What does something really cost?
Enter a monthly price to see it in hours of your life.
Take-home pay is used deliberately: tax has already gone, so this is the money that reaches you. Paid hours are contracted hours × 52 ÷ 12, which spreads the year evenly rather than assuming four-week months.

Real Wages, Answered Plainly.
How do I calculate my true hourly wage?
Take your pay after tax, subtract every cost you carry only because you work, then divide by every hour the job actually consumes — contracted hours plus unpaid overtime plus commuting. The result is almost always lower than the stated rate, and the gap is widest for salaried roles with long commutes and unbilled hours, which is precisely where the stated figure is quoted most confidently.
What counts as a work-only cost?
Anything that disappears the day the job does: commuting fares or fuel and parking, lunches bought because you are out, clothing you would not otherwise own, childcare during working hours, tools or equipment you personally fund, and courses required to stay in the role. Not included: costs you would carry anyway, such as your phone, your home, or food eaten at home.
Should I use gross or net pay?
Net, every time. Gross pay measures what the job is worth to an employer; net pay measures what it is worth to you. Since the purpose of this figure is to price your own purchases in hours, the only relevant number is the money that actually reaches your account — tax has already gone and cannot be spent.
Why does commuting time count if I am not paid for it?
Because the hour is gone either way. Unpaid time is exactly the time the stated wage pretends does not exist, and excluding it is what makes two jobs with identical salaries look identical when one takes ten more hours a week of your life. Counting it is what lets you compare a shorter commute or a remote role against a raise on equal terms.
How does knowing my true hourly wage change anything?
It converts prices into hours, which is a unit people are far worse at ignoring. A recurring charge that reads as a small monthly figure reads very differently as a number of hours worked every month, permanently, to keep it. The arithmetic has not changed — only the unit — and that is usually enough to make a decision that the money figure never prompted.
Is this wage calculator private?
Yes, by architecture rather than by promise. Every calculation runs inside your own browser. The page sets no cookies, writes nothing to local storage, loads no analytics or advertising script, and makes no network request carrying your figures. Closing the tab destroys the data because there is nowhere else for it to be. Check the network and storage panels in your browser's developer tools — that is the only kind of privacy claim worth making.
